What's the best way to get rid of a hot tub?

There are several ways you could get rid of an unwanted hot tub.

If it is in good working condition, you could try selling it privately or giving it to somebody willing to arrange its removal.

You could also try disposing of it yourself, although hot tubs are large, heavy and awkward to move. You’ll need to think about safe electrical disconnection, draining the spa, moving it out of the garden and finding somewhere suitable to dispose of the different materials.

The easiest option is usually to use a professional hot tub disposal company.

That’s where Move Your Spa comes in.

Our specialist teams travel throughout the UK removing unwanted hot tubs from homes and businesses, using equipment specifically designed for moving spas.

How to get rid of a hot tub

Disposing of an unwanted hot tub might seem straightforward, but it often turns into a time-consuming and labour-intensive task.

Whether it’s draining the water, disconnecting electrical and plumbing systems, or dismantling the tub itself, the process can quickly become overwhelming. While there are a few DIY options, the easiest and most hassle-free solution is to hire a professional hot tub removal service like Move Your Spa.

Here’s how to get rid of a hot tub for free:

• Drain the water: This can take hours, depending on the size of the tub, and must be done thoroughly to avoid spillage during removal and to reduce weight.

• Disconnect the power and plumbing: You’ll need to safely disconnect electrical and plumbing connections, which can be dangerous without the right knowledge.

• Deal with the weight: Even when empty, hot tubs can weigh up to half a tonne, making them incredibly difficult to move without specialist equipment or a team of helpers.

• Dismantle the tub: Breaking it into smaller pieces may make it more manageable, but this requires heavy-duty tools like a circular saw and the proper safety gear.

• Arrange for disposal: You’ll need a skip or a large vehicle to transport the debris to a recycling centre, ensuring you comply with local disposal regulations.

These steps can be time-consuming, physically demanding, and costly if you don’t already have the necessary equipment. For a more straightforward and stress-free solution, hiring a professional hot tub removal service like Move Your Spa is the way to go.

Even after dismantling the hot tub, disposal presents another challenge. Some components can be recycled, but finding facilities that accept them may take time and effort. Local regulations may also require permits for disposing of large items, adding yet another layer of complexity. Instead of dealing with the physical and legal headaches, let Move Your Spa handle it all for you.

How we'll get rid of your hot tub

Spa Sled

Our teams use something called a Spa Sled.

This allows for your hot tub disposal to happen by dragging the spa along the ground without damage to your property.

The sled will not run on grass unless it’s ply-boarded beforehand. It can be folded down to fit through openings as little as 85cm.

The maximum size hot tub for the Spa Sledge (2-man team) is 215 x 215 x 95cm.

However, with a 3-man team the maximum size hot tub would be 240 x 240 x 95cm.

Spa Wedge

If our team have not had their Weetabix and can't lift the spa for whatever reason, we have something called a Spa Wedge.

This is an inflatable piece of kit which is placed under the hot tub and inflated, lifting the spa to the balance point.

How Our Hot Tub Removal Service Works

Getting rid of a hot tub doesn't need to be complicated.

1. Request a quote

Send us details of the hot tub, including its make and model if known, approximate dimensions, condition and your location.

We'll also need information about access from the hot tub to where our vehicle can park.

2. We assess the access

Hot tubs are bulky, so good access information is important.

We may ask you for photographs, videos and measurements of gateways, paths, steps or other restrictions so we can plan the removal properly.

If the spa is surrounded by decking, underneath a gazebo or has another obstruction around it, let us know when requesting your quote.

3. Prepare the hot tub

Before our team arrives, the hot tub should normally be:

  • Completely drained
  • Disconnected from its electrical supply
  • Clear of accessories and removable items
  • Accessible for our team to move

We'll explain exactly what is required before your booking.

4. We remove it

Our professionally trained team will arrive with specialist hot tub moving equipment and remove the spa from your property.

Where access allows, we use equipment such as our Spa Sledge to move the hot tub safely towards our vehicle.

5. We take it away

Once loaded, your unwanted hot tub leaves with us.

Depending on its condition, the spa can be taken back for appropriate disposal and the recoverable materials separated for recycling.

No skip sitting on your driveway. No struggling with a huge hot tub yourself. And no trying to work out how you're going to transport it afterwards.

FAQs

Can I Get Rid of a Broken Hot Tub?

Yes.

A hot tub doesn't need to be working for us to remove it.

We regularly help customers get rid of hot tubs that have developed problems with pumps, heaters, control systems or other components and are no longer worth repairing.

The important consideration is the physical condition of the spa.

Our team needs to be able to move the hot tub safely as a complete unit. If the structure or cabinet has become severely rotten or compromised, please tell us when requesting your quote and send photographs so we can assess it.

Do You Dismantle Hot Tubs in the Garden?

No. Our removal service is designed around moving the hot tub from the property as a complete unit.

We don't arrive and cut the spa into pieces in your garden.

This is one reason why we ask for photographs, videos and measurements of the access route before the job. It allows us to assess how the hot tub can be removed and whether any obstacles need to be dealt with beforehand.

Where there is no suitable ground-level access, other lifting options may sometimes be possible depending on the property.

Can You Remove a Hot Tub With Difficult Access?

Potentially, yes.

Our teams specialise in moving hot tubs and have equipment designed specifically for the job.

Narrow gateways, awkward paths, steps, walls and other obstacles don't automatically mean your hot tub can't be removed.

For more difficult locations we may need additional information, extra assistance or specialist lifting equipment.

Send us photographs or a video of the route from the hot tub to the road and we'll assess the access before your booking.

Move Your Spa is based in Nottingham, but our specialist teams operate nationwide.

From straightforward garden removals to more challenging access, we help customers across the country get rid of unwanted hot tubs without the hassle of trying to move them themselves.
